Do You Need RBS Certification in California?
RBS stands for Responsible Beverage Service, and since July 1, 2022 the certification has been mandatory for anyone who serves or supervises the service of alcohol for on-site consumption. If you pour, sell, take orders for, or check IDs for alcohol at an ABC-licensed on-premise venue, you need it. That includes:
Bartenders and servers
Cocktail and banquet staff
Tasting Room and brewery pourers
Security staff who check IDs
Hosts and cashiers who take alcohol orders
Shift leads, bar managers, and general managers who supervise service
New hires can work during a 60-day grace period from their first day of employment, but they must be fully certified by day 60. A handful of narrow roles are exempt, such as distributors running product-marketing tastings, academic instructors, and certain complimentary beer or wine situations. How Do You Get RBS Certified in California?
The program is administered by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, and getting certified takes three steps in a specific order.
Register on the ABC RBS Portal first. Create an account on the official ABC RBS Portal and get your unique Server ID. Do this before anything else, because training completed without a Server ID on file does not count toward your certification.

How Long Is RBS Certification Valid, and How Do You Renew?
RBS certification is valid for three years from the date you pass the exam. The ABC sends renewal reminders at 90, 60, 30, and 10 days before expiration. You can renew starting 90 days before your expiration date by paying the recertification fee, retaking an approved course, and passing the exam again within 30 days. There is no automatic renewal and no grace period after expiration, so it pays to renew early. If you enroll in renewal training more than 90 days before you expire, the Portal will not accept it.
