Responsibility Works, the alcohol awareness training for employees developed by Responsibility.org, is now available on Learn Brands.

The course gives people who work in beverage alcohol, and anyone who wants a solid foundation, the core facts they need to make informed, responsible choices about alcohol at work and in their personal lives. It takes 30 to 40 minutes, runs self-paced, and ends with a certificate from Responsibility.org.

Why alcohol awareness belongs in employee training

Most people in this industry can tell you a lot about the products they sell. Fewer can explain what counts as a standard drink across a craft IPA, a glass of wine, and a cocktail, or what drives blood alcohol concentration. Those basics matter for everyone, and even more for people whose jobs put alcohol in front of them every day: sales reps at trade events, retail staff, brand ambassadors running tastings.

Responsibility Works covers those basics in one short session, using content from an organization that has focused on alcohol responsibility since 1991.

What the course covers

Responsibility Works has two units.

The Basics of Alcohol. Learners will:

  • Understand what alcohol is and what a standard drink is

  • Recognize a standard drink across different products and serving containers

  • Know the U.S. Dietary Guidelines as they relate to beverage alcohol

  • Understand BAC, the factors that affect it, and how alcohol affects an individual

Workplace Scenarios. Learners apply what they covered in the first unit to realistic situations on the job.

Course features:

  • Self-paced, 30 to 40 minutes

  • Evidence-based content from Responsibility.org

  • Interactive pouring simulations

  • Digital blood alcohol calculator

  • Multiple-choice assessment (70% to pass, retakes allowed)

  • Certificate from Responsibility.org on completion

A quick look: what is a standard drink?

In the U.S., a standard drink contains about 0.6 fluid ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol. That works out to roughly:

  • 12 oz of beer at about 5% ABV

  • 5 oz of wine at 12% ABV

  • 1.5 oz of distilled spirits at 40% ABV (80 proof)

Real pours rarely line up that neatly. A heavy wine pour, a high-ABV beer or a cocktail with two shots can each hold well over one standard drink. The course's pouring simulations show this better than any chart.
