Every retailer trains product knowledge. Almost none of them train the conversation that carries it.

A new associate learns the planogram, the POS, the return policy and the top twenty SKUs in their first week. Nobody sits them down and shows them how to open with someone who looks lost, how to hear what a customer actually means when they say they want something reliable, or what to do when a person arrives at the counter already angry. Those moments decide whether the sale happens and whether the customer comes back, and most staff are left to work them out on their own.

Why this matters now

Your floor team is the only part of the business a customer talks to. Everything else about the visit can be matched online, usually cheaper. The interaction cannot.

Retail turnover means you are teaching this again every few months, and doing it by shadowing costs you a senior associate’s time for every new hire. A short, structured course gets everyone to the same baseline in under an hour, and gives managers something concrete to coach against instead of “be friendly”.

What you will learn

Four modules, built around what actually happens on a retail floor.

  • Foundations and Listening: what a customer reads in the first three seconds, the difference between hearing and listening, paraphrasing to confirm, and why the pause after someone speaks is where the real answer shows up

  • Voice, Tone, and Body: word choice that opens a conversation instead of closing it, framing what you can do when the answer is no, what your posture says before you speak, and how to read a customer’s body language without staring

  • Asking the Right Questions and Adapting: open and closed questions and when each is the right tool, a discovery set you can use in any category, why the second question beats the first, and how to adjust pace and detail for the person in front of you

  • Hard Moments and Team Handoffs: validating a feeling without accepting fault, staying calm when a customer escalates, knowing when to involve a manager, and handing a customer or a message cleanly to the next shift

The format

Self-paced and built for a phone, because most of your team will take it on a break.

Each module runs the same pattern: a short overview, key concepts at a glance, seven teaching slides, one behaviour to try on your next shift, eight flashcards for recall, and a six-question knowledge check with feedback on every answer.

About 35 minutes of training in total, plus a 50-question final exam. Most people finish in about an hour, across one or two sittings. Progress saves automatically.

Your credential

The final exam is 50 questions drawn from all four modules. You need 75 percent to pass, and you can retake it as many times as you need.

Pass and the Retail Sales Academy certificate is issued in your name and stored in your company account, where a manager can pull it without chasing anyone for a PDF.

Mastering Communication is the foundation course of the Retail Sales Academy. The skills it teaches sit underneath everything else your team does on the floor, which is why it comes first in the path.

Who should take it

  • Floor associates and sales staff at any experience level

Retail Sales Academy: Mastering Communication FAQ

Who is this course for?

Anyone who talks to customers on a retail floor. It assumes no prior training and works for a first-week hire and a ten-year veteran, because it gives both of them the same vocabulary for what good looks like.

How long does it take?

About 35 minutes of training plus the final exam. Most people finish in about an hour. It is self-paced and progress saves, so it can be taken across two or three breaks.

Is there a test?

Yes. A 50-question final exam covering all four modules, with 75 percent to pass. You can retake it as many times as you need. The knowledge checks inside each module are practice and are not graded, so people can get things wrong while they learn without it counting against them.

What do I get when I pass?

A Retail Sales Academy certificate issued by Learn Brands, in your name, filed in your company account.

Is this specific to any product category?

No. It is about the conversation, so it works the same in a liquor store, a dispensary, a grocery chain or a specialty shop. Pair it with a product knowledge course for the category your team actually sells.

Can I train a whole team?

Yes. Assign seats by name or by location from your company dashboard and track completion across stores. Volume pricing starts at 10 seats.

Can I reassign a seat?

Yes, until the learner has started the course.
