A customer picks a laptop and walks out without the case, the warranty or the model that would actually have run their software. Two weeks later they are back, unhappy, or they are shopping somewhere else.

Upselling and cross-selling done well prevents that. It means showing a better fit when there is one and adding what makes the purchase work on day one. This course teaches associates to do both honestly, so customers thank them for it.

Why this matters now

Average order value moves when associates help customers finish the job they came in to do. It drops when customers feel sold to.

Most training on this is a script or a target, and neither tells an associate what to say when a customer hesitates over price. This course gives the whole floor a shared, honest method in about half an hour, and gives managers specific moments to coach.

What you will learn

Five short lessons and a practice scenario, built around what actually happens on a retail floor.

  • Up or Across: telling an upsell from a cross-sell, and what makes either one feel like help

  • Features Into Benefits: turning specs into reasons a customer cares about, and knowing products well enough to be honest about them

  • Good, Better, Best: presenting options in an order that makes value clear, and keeping the comparison fair

  • Complete the Solution: making sure the purchase works on day one, and growing the basket across the store, a tablet and an online cart

  • When They Hesitate: treating a pause or a price worry as information, and stepping to the option that fits

  • Put It All Together: a practice scenario with one customer, start to finish, where every choice shapes how the visit goes

The examples come from electronics, bike shops, apparel, home goods, beauty, sporting goods, grocery and hardware, because the method is the same in all of them.

The practice scenario

Before the final check, learners run a full customer visit. It’s a weekday evening at a bike shop and Jordan is buying a commuter bike for a new job. The learner picks what to say at six moments, Jordan speaks their lines aloud, every pick gets a short coaching note, and the visit ends one of three ways depending on the choices made.

At the end, learners see where they were strong and what to work on across six skills: up or across, features into benefits, good, better, best, completing the solution, handling hesitation, and following policy. They can replay it to try other paths, but only the first run counts as their evaluation, so managers get an honest read on each person and a clear place to start coaching.

The format

Self-paced and built for a phone, because most of your team will take it on a break.

Each lesson is a narrated, captioned slideshow of about three minutes that teaches one idea at a time. Then learners put it to work: key terms, a real floor moment to read, a quick check with feedback on every answer, a game, and review cards.

About 35 minutes in total, including the practice scenario and the final check. Progress saves automatically, so it can be finished in one sitting or across a few breaks.

Your credential

The course closes with a graded final check of 20 questions drawn from every lesson. You need 15 right to pass, 75 percent. You see why after every answer, and you can retake it as many times as you need.

Pass and the Retail Sales Academy certificate is issued in your name and stored in your company account, where a manager can pull it without chasing anyone for a PDF.

Mastering Upselling & Cross-Selling builds on Mastering Suggestive Selling: that course covers the first suggestion, and this one covers growing the basket after it.

Who should take it

  • Floor associates and sales staff who already know their products

  • Associates in categories with accessories, add-ons or good, better, best ranges

  • Online order and tablet-assisted sales staff

  • Shift leads and keyholders who coach the floor

  • Store managers working on average order value

Retail Sales Academy: Mastering Upselling & Cross-Selling FAQ

Who is this course for?

Anyone who helps customers choose between products or complete a purchase. It assumes no sales training, and it works best once an associate knows the range they sell.

How long does it take?

About 35 minutes, including the practice scenario and the final check. It is self-paced and progress saves, so it can be taken across two or three breaks.

What is the practice scenario?

A choose-your-path customer visit that comes right before the final check. Learners pick what to say at six moments with one customer, get a coaching note on every pick, and finish with their strengths and what to work on across six skills. Their first run is kept as their skills evaluation.

Is there a test?

Yes. A 20-question final check covering every lesson, with 15 right to pass. You can retake it as many times as you need. The practice in each lesson and the practice scenario are not graded, so people can get things wrong while they learn without it counting against them.

What do I get when I pass?

A Retail Sales Academy certificate issued by Learn Brands, in your name, filed in your company account.

Does it teach staff to push the most expensive option?

No. It teaches presenting options in an order that makes value clear, recommending the one that fits, and stepping down to a better fit when a customer hesitates.

Is this specific to any product category?

No. The examples come from electronics, bikes, apparel, home goods, beauty, sporting goods, grocery and hardware, because the method is the same in all of them. Pair it with a product knowledge course for the category your team actually sells.

Can I train a whole team?

Yes. Assign seats by name or by location from your company dashboard and track completion across stores. Volume pricing starts at 10 seats.

Can I reassign a seat?

Yes, until the learner has started the course.
