Customers leave stores every day without the one thing that would have made their purchase work: the roller for the paint, the case for the phone, the bread for the pasta.

Most associates know the product well enough to suggest it. What they lack is a feel for the moment and the words. Some say nothing because they do not want to sound pushy. Others offer everything to everyone and get tuned out. This course teaches the middle path: one relevant suggestion, at the right time, in words that sound like a person.

Why this matters now

A suggestion is the cheapest sale a store makes. The customer is already there, already buying, and often glad to be reminded.

Teaching it by shadowing means every new hire picks up whatever habits the person next to them has. A short, structured course gives the whole floor the same approach in about half an hour, and gives managers specific moments to coach.

What you will learn

Five short lessons and a practice scenario, built around what actually happens on a retail floor.

  • What Suggestive Selling Is: the difference between a suggestion that helps and one that pushes, and why customers welcome the first kind

  • Reading the Customer: spotting browsing, hesitant and ready customers, and choosing the moment that fits each one

  • The Recommendation: four openers that sound like a person, and why naming the product works better than naming a category

  • Timing, Pairing, and Bundling: offering at the moment of commitment, and turning a pairing into a picture the customer can see

  • Handling No, and Making It a Habit: taking a no with a smile, respecting a hard stop, and building the habit so suggesting becomes automatic

  • Put It All Together: a practice scenario with one customer, start to finish, where every choice shapes how the visit goes

The examples come from hardware stores, beauty counters, bookstores, sporting goods, electronics, grocery, wine shops and gift shops, because the skill is the same in all of them.

The practice scenario

Before the final check, learners run a full customer visit. It’s Saturday afternoon at a neighborhood market and Dana is cooking dinner for six. The learner picks what to say at six moments, Dana speaks their lines aloud, every pick gets a short coaching note, and the visit ends one of three ways depending on the choices made.

At the end, learners see where they were strong and what to work on across six skills: reading the customer, the recommendation, timing, pairing, handling a no, and following policy. They can replay it to try other paths, but only the first run counts as their evaluation, so managers get an honest read on each person and a clear place to start coaching.

The format

Self-paced and built for a phone, because most of your team will take it on a break.

Each lesson is a narrated, captioned slideshow of about three minutes that teaches one idea at a time. Then learners put it to work: key terms, a real floor moment to read, a quick check with feedback on every answer, a game, and review cards.

About 35 minutes in total, including the practice scenario and the final check. Progress saves automatically, so it can be finished in one sitting or across a few breaks.

Your credential

The course closes with a graded final check of 20 questions drawn from every lesson. You need 15 right to pass, 75 percent. You see why after every answer, and you can retake it as many times as you need.

Pass and the Retail Sales Academy certificate is issued in your name and stored in your company account, where a manager can pull it without chasing anyone for a PDF.

Mastering Suggestive Selling covers the first suggestion. Mastering Upselling & Cross-Selling picks up where it ends, with growing the basket after the first choice.

Who should take it

  • New retail hires who are ready to go past ringing up

  • Floor associates and sales staff at any experience level

  • Cashiers and counter staff who see every customer at the moment of purchase

  • Shift leads and keyholders who coach the floor

  • Store managers who want a shared way to talk about add-on sales

Retail Sales Academy: Mastering Suggestive Selling FAQ

Who is this course for?

Anyone who helps customers choose what to buy. It assumes no sales training and works the same for a first-week hire and a seasoned associate.

How long does it take?

About 35 minutes, including the practice scenario and the final check. It is self-paced and progress saves, so it can be taken across two or three breaks.

What is the practice scenario?

A choose-your-path customer visit that comes right before the final check. Learners pick what to say at six moments with one customer, get a coaching note on every pick, and finish with their strengths and what to work on across six skills. Their first run is kept as their skills evaluation.

Is there a test?

Yes. A 20-question final check covering every lesson, with 15 right to pass. You can retake it as many times as you need. The practice in each lesson and the practice scenario are not graded, so people can get things wrong while they learn without it counting against them.

What do I get when I pass?

A Retail Sales Academy certificate issued by Learn Brands, in your name, filed in your company account.

Will it make my staff pushy?

It teaches the opposite. One relevant suggestion, offered once, at the moment the customer commits, and a graceful exit when they say no.

Is this specific to any product category?

No. The examples come from hardware, beauty, books, sporting goods, electronics, grocery, wine and gifts, because the skill is the same in all of them. Pair it with a product knowledge course for the category your team actually sells.

Can I train a whole team?

Yes. Assign seats by name or by location from your company dashboard and track completion across stores. Volume pricing starts at 10 seats.

Can I reassign a seat?

Yes, until the learner has started the course.
