At the intermediate level, knowing the answer is only half the job. The questions ask why: why Sancerre is crisp, why a warm vintage tastes riper, why a region grows the grapes it does.

This course moves you from what to why in ten lessons on the vineyard and winery in depth, tasting for quality, and the classic regions of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Portugal and the New World. Then you practice with a 246 question bank and timed mock exams.

What you will learn

Ten short lessons, each with a narrated lesson, practice and a five question lesson check with the answer and why after every pick.

  • Moving Up a Level: what changes at the intermediate level, and how to study so the reasons stick

  • The Vineyard in Depth: climate types, what warms or cools a site, vineyard hazards and growers' choices

  • Winemaking Choices: the decisions that turn the same grapes into very different wines, and how to spot them in the glass

  • Tasting for Quality: judging how good a wine is, explaining why, and deciding whether it is ready to drink

  • France in Depth: Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône, the Loire and Alsace: grapes, places and why the wines taste the way they do

  • Italy and Spain: Piedmont, Tuscany, the Veneto and the south, then Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Spain's coasts

  • Germany, Austria and Portugal: Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, the Douro's dry reds and Port, Madeira, and two classics from Hungary

  • The New World in Depth: the regions behind the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and South Africa, and what cools each one

  • Sparkling, Sweet and Fortified in Depth: how Champagne gets its toast, the five ways to make a sweet wine, and fortified wines

  • Exam Day: multiple choice and short written answers, then timed mock exams

Practice that shows you where you stand

The mock exam draws 50 questions from a 246 question bank, spread across every topic, with a 60 minute clock you can switch off. Each attempt avoids the questions from your last one.

When you finish you see your score, your results by topic with the weakest first, a button to study each weak lesson, and every question you missed with why. Take it as many times as you like. Practice scores are a study guide, not a promise of any exam result.

The format

Self-paced and built for a phone or a computer. Lessons are narrated and captioned, with games, review cards and practice between them. Progress saves automatically, so you can study in short sessions.

Your certificate

The course closes with a 20 question final quiz. You need 14 right to pass, 70 percent, and you can retake it as many times as you need. Pass and you get a Learn Brands course completion certificate in your name, kept in your Learn Brands account.
