Advanced wine study is about connecting causes: how site, climate and winemaking together shape the wine in the glass, and how to explain it in an answer that earns every mark.

This course covers viticulture and winemaking in depth, wine faults, writing a structured tasting note, and the classic regions of the Old and New World. Then you practice with a 242 question bank, a buyer practice scenario and timed mock exams.

What you will learn

Ten short lessons, each with a narrated lesson, practice and a five question lesson check with the answer and why after every pick.

  • Thinking Like an Advanced Candidate: how advanced questions differ and how to build an answer that earns every mark

  • Viticulture in Depth: the vine's year, training and pruning, water, ripeness and harvest decisions

  • Winemaking and Faults: white and red winemaking choices, oak and lees, finishing, and how to spot common faults

  • Writing a Tasting Note: a full, precise four-part note, with quality and readiness judged and explained

  • Bordeaux and Burgundy: the communes, soils and grapes behind France's two most studied regions

  • The Rest of France and Champagne: the Rhône and Loire in depth, France's other classic corners, and how Champagne is made and labeled

  • Italy and Spain in Depth: Piedmont, Tuscany and the Veneto, Rioja and Ribera, and the full story of Sherry

  • Germany, Austria, Portugal and Hungary: Germany's regions and site ladder, the Wachau, Port and Madeira, and Tokaji

  • The New World in Depth: the sub-regions behind the best New World wines, labeling rules, and a practice meeting with a buyer

  • Exam Day: advanced multiple choice, written answers, tasting under time, and timed mock exams

Practice that shows you where you stand

The mock exam draws 50 questions from a 242 question bank, spread across every topic, with a 60 minute clock you can switch off. Each attempt avoids the questions from your last one.

When you finish you see your score, your results by topic with the weakest first, a button to study each weak lesson, and every question you missed with why. Take it as many times as you like. Practice scores are a study guide, not a promise of any exam result.

The format

Self-paced and built for a phone or a computer. Lessons are narrated and captioned, with games, review cards and practice between them. Progress saves automatically, so you can study in short sessions.

Your certificate

The course closes with a 20 question final quiz. You need 14 right to pass, 70 percent, and you can retake it as many times as you need. Pass and you get a Learn Brands course completion certificate in your name, kept in your Learn Brands account.
