Built for California dispensary staff. California has no statewide rule that budtenders complete a training course, but every licensed retailer answers to the Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) for each sale, and some cities and counties set their own training rules. California Cannabis Retail Essentials teaches the DCC rules that come up on every shift, in about two hours.

The California rules behind every sale

  • Confirm age and identity before anyone enters the retail area, and sell adult-use cannabis only to customers 21 and older (4 CCR 15402 and 15404)

  • Daily adult-use limits of 28.5 grams of non-concentrated cannabis, 8 grams of concentrate, and 6 immature plants (4 CCR 15409)

  • Employee badges, sales only between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., and no alcohol or tobacco on the premises

  • Opaque exit packaging, the safer-use brochure for every new customer, and no free cannabis

  • Customer privacy and the confidentiality of medical ID cards and physician recommendations

  • Reporting theft, diversion, and significant inventory discrepancies to the DCC and local law enforcement within 24 hours (4 CCR 15036)

Some cities add their own rules. Long Beach requires customer-facing staff to take the city's own training within 60 days of hire and every 24 months, and Mammoth Lakes requires a town-authorized program before anyone works the sales floor. This course does not replace a city's required program.

Also required for California employers

California employers with 5 or more employees must also provide sexual harassment prevention training: 1 hour for staff and 2 hours for supervisors, every 2 years. Add California Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for staff and California AB 1825, AB 2053, and SB 396 Training for supervisors.

Built for operators running a whole team

New hires can finish the course on their phone before their first shift. The Learn Brands LMS stores every certificate and shows who has finished and who is outstanding.

California cannabis training FAQ

Does California require budtender training?

California has no statewide rule that budtenders complete a training course, and the Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) does not approve courses. Some cities and counties set their own training rules, such as Long Beach and Mammoth Lakes. Ask your manager which local rules apply to your store.

How long does this course take?

About two hours, self-paced, on a phone or a computer.

What topics does it cover?

California and federal cannabis law and the DCC, rules for every shift, ID checks and refusing a sale, purchase limits and completing the sale, customer privacy and conduct, security and theft, intoxication and emergencies, and products, potency, and onset.

Does it replace my store's own training?

No. Your store still trains staff on its own procedures, hands-on Metrc and POS use, and the products on its menu. It also does not replace a city's own required program, the Cal/OSHA training your license needs, or sexual harassment prevention training.

Do California cannabis employers need sexual harassment prevention training too?

Yes, at employers with 5 or more employees. California requires 1 hour of training for staff and 2 hours for supervisors, within 6 months of hire and every 2 years. It is a separate course.

How do I train my whole team at once?

Buy bulk seats, assign them to staff, and track completion in the dashboard. Bulk discounts are available to all companies on Learn Brands.
