If you serve or sell alcohol in Texas, TABC certification shows employers you know how to do it responsibly. Texas does not legally require it, but most employers do, so getting certified opens more doors and keeps you compliant from day one. It is built for servers, bartenders, clerks, managers, and owners, whether this is a first certification or a renewal, and it is approved by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and recognized statewide.
What you'll learn
How to spot the signs of intoxication and refuse a sale with minimal conflict
How to prevent underage and second-party sales, and how to check IDs and recognize fakes
Your obligations under Texas law for sales to minors, intoxicated persons, and non-members of a private club
Blood alcohol concentration, how it is calculated, and the responsibilities sellers carry under the Dram Shop Act
The rules for to-go orders, delivery, and other alcohol permits
Format and exam
The course is fully online and available 24/7, with no timer, and takes about two hours for most people. Work through four short lessons, then pass the 25-question final exam at 70 percent or better, with two attempts. You can print your certificate the moment you pass.
Reporting and renewal
Your completion is reported to the TABC within 8 to 9 business days, so your employer can verify it on the TABC Certificate Inquiry page. The certification stays valid for two years from the issue date, and to renew you retake the full course before it expires, since there is no shorter refresher or test-out option. Course access runs for 60 days from enrollment.
The Learn2Serve TABC seller-server program, approved by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and built to certify you or your whole team the same day.
Who needs TABC certification?
TABC certification is for anyone who sells, serves, or delivers alcohol in Texas, along with their immediate managers. Texas does not require individual servers to be certified by law, but nearly every employer requires it before a first shift, and anyone delivering alcohol to customers must be certified under the state's Responsible Alcohol Delivery program. If your job touches alcohol in Texas, this is the credential employers expect.
Why employers require it: Safe Harbor
The reason is Safe Harbor. Under Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code section 106.14, a business is protected from losing its license over an employee's illegal sale, but only if every alcohol-handling employee and their immediate manager is certified within 30 days of hire, the business keeps written responsible-service policies, and staff have read them. Miss the 30-day window on even one hire and that protection lapses for anything that employee does. For a Texas operator with turnover, keeping everyone certified and current is what keeps the license safe.
What's in the course
The Learn2Serve TABC program is fully online and self-paced across four lessons, ending in a 25-question exam and a certificate you can download the same day. It covers Texas alcohol law, checking IDs, recognizing intoxication, refusing service, and your liability as a seller-server. Your completion is reported to TABC, and the certificate is valid for two years statewide.
Certifying a whole team
Buy seats in bulk, assign them to new hires on day one, and track who is certified, who is still inside the 30-day window, and whose certificate is coming up for renewal, all from one dashboard. That visibility is how a multi-location operator stays inside Safe Harbor instead of finding out about a lapse during a dram-shop case.
