OSHA created the HAZWOPER standard, 29 CFR 1910.120, so that workers who clean up, treat, store, dispose of, or otherwise handle hazardous waste can do the job without putting their health and safety at risk, and the standard requires extensive, structured training before they start. This course meets the instructional requirements for HAZWOPER workers at the highest level of risk. Across 24 lessons it covers every mandatory topic, and it folds in Globally Harmonized System (GHS) hazard communication so your training also lines up with OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard.
What you'll learn
GHS and OSHA's chemical labeling requirements, including how to find safety information about the substances on your worksite
The hazards you may face on the job: site characterization, toxicology, hazard recognition, hazardous chemical awareness, radiation hazards, and bloodborne pathogens
The tools that keep you safe: safe work practices, respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment, and decontamination methods
Required monitoring, including medical surveillance, air monitoring, and material sampling
Emergencies and special situations, including emergency procedures, confined spaces, excavations, and fire protection
Important note on certification
Plan for one extra step. The online course covers the required classroom instruction, but OSHA also requires three full days of directly supervised field experience to complete your HAZWOPER 40 certification, and you arrange that hands-on portion separately.
