Massachusetts ID Checking teaches staff to check an ID the Massachusetts way in about 25 minutes. It is built for anyone who sells or serves alcohol, cannabis, tobacco or vapes. Learners practice on the real Registry of Motor Vehicles sample cards, so they know what a valid Massachusetts license, Mass ID and Liquor ID look like before a customer hands one over.

What the course covers

  • A four-step ID check: feel, look, ask, give back

  • The Massachusetts age rule: 21 and over for alcohol, cannabis, tobacco and vapes

  • Which IDs are on the Massachusetts alcohol list: a Massachusetts license, Mass ID, Liquor ID, a passport or U.S. passport card, a U.S. military ID, and out-of-state driver's licenses and Global Entry cards, the last two added April 8, 2025

  • Cannabis stores: checking the ID at the door and again at the register

  • Tobacco and vape sales: verifying every buyer with a government photo ID that shows a date of birth

  • Asking for the physical card instead of a photo on a phone

  • Spotting a card that doesn't pass and matching the face to the photo

  • Refusing a sale in one calm line

  • What to do with a bad card, and what a missed check can cost

Who it is for

Staff in Massachusetts who sell or serve age-restricted products:

  • Cashiers and clerks at retail stores that sell alcohol

  • Bartenders and servers at bars and restaurants

  • Dispensary staff, at the door and at the register

  • Convenience store and smoke shop staff who sell tobacco or vapes

  • Managers who want every new hire checking IDs the same way

How it works

The course is online and self-paced, and it works on a phone or a desktop. Five short narrated videos with captions walk through each part of the check. Learners also get hands-on practice on the real Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles sample cards: the license, the under-21 vertical cards, the Mass ID and the Liquor ID. Quick questions follow each part.

An eight-question final check closes the course, and learners need six correct to pass. Those who pass receive a certificate of completion, valid for 12 months.

What this course does not replace

This course builds one skill: checking IDs. It does not replace responsible vendor training, alcohol seller and server training, or any other training that Massachusetts, a city or town, or an employer requires. It is not legal advice.
