Virginia requires every medical cannabis employee to be trained before starting work. Under 3VAC10-40-100, all employees of a medical cannabis facility, such as a pharmaceutical processor or a cannabis dispensing facility, complete training in four areas before they start, and in-service training at least once a year. The facility keeps a written training record signed by each trainee. This course helps a facility meet and document that training duty.

What Virginia requires

Virginia puts the training duty on the facility. The rules call for:

  • Training before an employee starts work on security measures to prevent diversion, theft, or loss of cannabis; procedures for responding to an emergency; professional conduct, ethics, and patient confidentiality laws; and developments in the medical use of cannabis products (3VAC10-40-100)

  • In-service training at least once a year (3VAC10-40-100)

  • A written record of all training with each trainee's name, the dates, the topics, the supervisor's name, and the signatures of the trainee and the pharmacist-in-charge (PIC) or responsible party (3VAC10-40-100)

  • Employees who are at least 18 years old (3VAC10-30-90)

The four hours and the 1-year certificate are Learn Brands' own standards. This course covers the shared topics. Each facility still trains staff on its own written procedures, its security and emergency plans, and its systems.

Virginia medical cannabis training FAQ

Does Virginia require medical cannabis employee training?

Yes. Every employee of a Virginia medical cannabis facility completes training before starting work, in four areas: security measures against diversion, theft, or loss; emergency response; professional conduct, ethics, and patient confidentiality laws; and developments in the medical use of cannabis. Facilities also give in-service training at least once a year (3VAC10-40-100).

Is this course approved by the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority?

No. This course is not approved or endorsed by the Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) or any state agency. Virginia puts the training duty on the facility. The course is built on Chapter 16 of Title 4.1 of the Code of Virginia and CCA regulations in 3VAC10, and it supports the training and the signed record that 3VAC10-40-100 requires.

Who should take it?

Employees of Virginia pharmaceutical processors and cannabis dispensing facilities. It is written for pharmacy technicians and the staff who work with patients, and it also fits inventory, vault, security, and cultivation staff. Pharmacists and managers can use it to train their teams.

How long does it take?

About four hours, self-paced. The four hours are Learn Brands' own standard.

What topics does it cover?

Federal and Virginia law, working in a medical cannabis facility, patients and written certifications, registered agents and parents or guardians, checking ID, dispensing limits and products, privacy and confidentiality, security and diversion, emergency response, and what's changing in Virginia.

Does it cover adult-use retail sales?

It covers what the 2026 law sets out and what comes next. Retail sales may not begin before July 1, 2027. Until then, facilities dispense only to certified patients, registered agents, and parents or guardians of minor patients. Rules change, and so does this course.

Does the certificate expire?

Yes. The certificate of completion is a dated record, valid for 1 year, and Learn Brands sends renewal reminders before it expires. The 1 year is Learn Brands' own standard, and it lines up with Virginia's rule that facilities give in-service training at least once a year. The certificate is a training record. It is not a permit, a license, or a registration.

Does it replace my facility's own training?

No. Each facility still trains staff on its own written procedures, its security and emergency plans, and its systems, and keeps the signed training record Virginia requires. This course covers the shared knowledge every employee needs.

Do you offer team pricing?

Yes. A single seat is $59. Volume pricing is $49 per seat for 10 or more seats, $39 for 25 or more, and $29 for 50 or more. Buy seats, assign them to staff, and track completion in the dashboard. Bulk discounts are available to all companies on Learn Brands.
